Every year on the second Thursday of September, Australia pauses to ask a question that can change — and sometimes save — a life: “Are you OK?”
At JINIAA, this question sits close to the heart of everything we do. As a provider of NDIS and disability support services, we work every day with participants, support workers, and families who understand that wellbeing isn’t just physical — it’s emotional and social too. R U OK? Day is a timely reminder that checking in on the people around us should never be a once-a-year event, but a habit we carry all year round.
What is R U OK? Day?
R U OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding people that any day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” and to support those in our lives who may be struggling. The message is simple but powerful: a genuine, well-timed conversation can be the turning point that helps someone feel seen, supported, and less alone.
Why This Matters in the Disability and Community Support Sector
For those we support — NDIS participants navigating daily challenges, families managing caregiving responsibilities, and the dedicated support workers who show up for others every day — mental health and emotional wellbeing are just as important as physical care and daily living support.
Support workers often build deep, trusted relationships with the people they assist. That trust puts them in a unique position to notice when something feels different — a change in mood, energy, or routine — and to gently ask if everything is okay. At the same time, the people doing this caring work need to know that someone is checking in on them too.
At JINIAA, we believe genuine care goes both ways:
- For participants: feeling comfortable enough to open up to a trusted support worker or coordinator.
- For support workers and staff: knowing that their own wellbeing matters, and that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
- For families and carers: having a space to be honest about the demands of caregiving without judgement.
Four Simple Steps to Start a Meaningful Conversation
R U OK? Day encourages everyone to follow a simple framework when checking in on someone:
- Ask — “How are you really going?” Choose a good time and place, and ask with genuine curiosity.
- Listen — Give the person your full attention. Avoid rushing to fix things; just listen without judgement.
- Encourage action — Gently suggest practical next steps, whether that’s talking to a professional, a trusted person, or simply taking time for self-care.
- Check in — Follow up. A simple “I’ve been thinking about you, how are things now?” shows the conversation wasn’t a one-off.
These four steps are things anyone can practise — whether you’re a support worker, a coordinator, a family member, or a colleague.
How JINIAA is Getting Involved
This R U OK? Day, JINIAA is proud to support the national conversation around mental health and connection. We’re sharing resources across our team and community to help everyone feel confident having these important conversations — because a workplace and a community that checks in on each other is a stronger, safer one for everyone.
We encourage our staff, support workers, participants, and their families to take a moment this Thursday — and every day after — to reach out to someone who might need to hear, “Are you OK?”
A Reminder Beyond One Day
While R U OK?Day gives us a focal point each September, the message behind it belongs in every day of the year. A small, sincere check-in can make a genuine difference to someone’s day — sometimes more than we’ll ever know.
If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out to a GP, a trusted support worker, or a mental health professional is a strong and positive step. Support is always available, and no one has to face things alone.
